These experiences can sometimes resemble one another, but they should not be treated as interchangeable.

Open awareness

  • clarity
  • presence
  • greater responsiveness
  • grounded body sense

Possible dissociation

  • numbness
  • unreality
  • loss of functioning
  • emotional flatness
  • time distortion
  1. Ground the body — feet, temperature, movement, orienting to the room
  2. Reduce practice intensity temporarily
  3. Track functioning — sleep, work, relationships, appetite
  4. Seek support when impairment continues
