Open Awareness

Rather than focusing on one object, this practice widens attention to include the whole field of experience.

To recognize awareness as open, allowing, and not confined to any single sensation or thought.

  1. Sit with a relaxed posture.
  2. Let sounds, sensations, and thoughts arise without choosing one to follow.
  3. Notice that everything appears in a single field of knowing.
  4. When attention narrows, gently widen again—like relaxing a fist.
  5. Rest for 10 minutes without striving to change what appears.
  • Trying to make the mind blank
  • Confusing openness with spacing out or dissociation
  • Neglecting the body while seeking vastness
  • Was openness vivid, subtle, or conceptual?
  • What happened when a strong emotion appeared?
  • How does the body feel after practice?
