Loss of the Sense of Self

Many meditators report moments when the ordinary sense of being a separate person thins or vanishes. This can be liberating, confusing, or frightening.

Possible interpretations include:

  • Genuine insight into the constructed nature of identity
  • Temporary meditative absorption
  • Stress-related depersonalization
  • Trauma-related dissociation

Context matters: stability, embodiment, and functioning before and after the experience.

  • Grounding: feet on floor, cold water, slow movement, familiar routine
  • Reducing intensive practice temporarily
  • Journaling what changed and what remained
  • Speaking with a trusted, discerning friend or therapist

Seek support if you experience persistent unreality, inability to work or relate, panic, or emotional numbness lasting days or weeks.

Pause if the experience destabilizes sleep, appetite, relationships, or sense of safety.
