Loss of the Sense of Self

Many meditators report moments when the ordinary sense of being a separate person thins or vanishes. This can be liberating, confusing, or frightening.
What it may mean

- Temporary meditative absorption
- Stress-related depersonalization
- Trauma-related dissociation
Context matters: stability, embodiment, and functioning before and after the experience.
What usually helps

- Reducing intensive practice temporarily
- Journaling what changed and what remained
- Speaking with a trusted, discerning friend or therapist
Warning signs
Section titled “Warning signs”Seek support if you experience persistent unreality, inability to work or relate, panic, or emotional numbness lasting days or weeks.
When to pause practice
